The Inferno canto XI (11)

Don't forget to read the introduction and the notes after.

Please answer the question assigned to you and feel free to comment on others' answers.

1. Ji Yoon and David: find an example of imagery invoking the sense of sight, quote it, and write a sentence or two or three of "column two thinking" about it.

2. Ka Yeon and Sung Kun: find an example of imagery invoking the sense of smell, quote it, and write a sentence or two or three of "column two thinking" about it.

3. Elana and Demi: in line 3, Dante and Virgil find "ghastlier gangs." What might this phrase refer to? After giving your opinion, write a sentence or two or three of "column two thinking" about it.

4. Nick and Laura: In lines 22-27, Virgil explains why malicious fraud is worse than malicious violence. In your own words, what is his reasoning? Why would "man alone [being] capable" of malicious fraud make it worse?

Note: there are three cantos devoted to the seventh circle, one for each "round" of the circle (28-30). The first round is for murderers/destroyers (40-42), the second round for suicides (43-35), and the third round for blasphemers, whose who try to harm God himself by "railing" at (insulting) God. Specifically, Dante has in mind homosexuals and usurers (those who lend money and charge a lot of interest for doing so) (46-51, and see note for Sodom and Cahors).

Fraud is punished in the eighth circle, which has ten rounds, and the ninth circle, which has four rounds. Circle eight is for those who betray strangers. Circle nine is for those who betray friends and family.

5. Sang Eun, Emily, and Savannah: why would betraying friends and family be worse than betraying strangers?

6. Christy, Yeena, Heather: Virgil tells Dante that Aristotle (author of the Ethics) declared that inappropriate desire (incontinence) is less evil than anger (bestiality) and malice (violence against or betrayal of others) but he does not go into why. Why do you think inappropriate desire might not be as bad as anger, violence, and betrayal?

Note: In lines 94-111, Virgil explains to Dante why usury is so bad. The explanation will probably not make much sense. We'll go over it in class.

I think that inappropriate desire is not as bad as violence and anger because the desire is in your head. It is not nesessarily hurting anyone in a physical sense. The desire develops in your mind and not in your actions. Someone can have a desire in their head and no one would know about it unless they expressed that desire somehow. Violence and anger are very physical and they involve hurting someone or something in the process. The result of violence and anger can also lead to the person committing a greater sin like murder thus putting you even in a lower circle of hell. I believe that thinking something wrong is not nearly as bad as hurting someone physically.

Virgil says, basically, "There are two kinds of malicious things humans do. There is physically hurting each other, and there is mentally hurting each other, like lying. Lying is worse to hurt than violence is because only humans are capable of it. God gave us the ability and only us the ability to commit fraud, and if we use it and abuse it it's worse than attackign each other to cause the other pain. Lions do that... Monkeys do that... It's natural for all living creatures, but only humans can commit fraud and shouldn't therefore take abvantage of it."

"We came to the edge ofan enormous sink rimmed by a circle of great broken boulders."
I think this quote is an example of imagery using the sense of sight. First because the term "the edge of an enormous sink" makes me imagin the very edge of the sink in my dorm bathroom. Also I think this shows the setting and place where it's happening in and I think it relates to imagery and the sight of individual person.

I agree with Christy that inappropriate desire is not as bad as the other two desires because it is not hurting anyone around the person.

Virgil says that the desire of incontinence offends God least compare to the other two desires.

"how incontinence offends God least"

I was keep thinking why this desire was the least offensive one toward God but I can't really think of one except for the fact that it can't harm others physically. Incontinence happens inside of people's mind when ther other two desires makes others to get injured.

5. Why would betraying friends and family be worse than betraying strangers?

"The former mode of fraud not only denies the bond of Nature, but the special trust added by bonds of friendship or blood-ties."

Betraying friends and family would be worse than betraying strangers, because friends and family are people who have shared trusts with you. Your friends and family have spent a lont time with you and would know you much better than strangers. Strangers are people who you haven't seen before or barely know each other. With them, you don't really have any emotions or feelings. Thus, if you betray the strangers, they won't really feel like they were been betrayed. On the other hand, your friends and family would be very disappointed and blame themselves for believing you for such a long time. They would be the ones to feel very bad and you will actually hurt their feelings. I think this is why betraying friends and family is worse than betraying strangers.

"Before we travel on to that blind pit we must delay until our sense grows used to its foul breath, and then we will not mind it,"
I think that this is a quote involking the sense of smell. When The poets go in to the sixth circle, they are at a cliff with rocks that make a very strong, bad smell. It is so bad that they need to wait until they are used to the smell.

I completely agree with Laura. Virgil explains to Dante the three classifications of Hell - incontinence, violence and fraud, in order of lowest to highest offense. He explains to us that only humans are capable of fraud, and since other animals can commit acts of violence, it is the sin that "...God loathes...most".

My name is not on the list....although i picked a question of my choice.
Why would betraying friends and family be worse than betraying strangers?

I agree with sang eun in the fact that you know and trust your family and friends. This is because you have some sort of close bonding or relationship with them and know plenty about them and their life as well as them knowing the same about yourself. If you were to betray them, you would loose their trust and everything. Family is something you rely on everyday, as well as friends. They get you through hard times and will never turn on you.
Where as a stranger you don't even know, doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if you loose their trust, earn it or what not. They are a person who is insuggnificant to your life, since they have no meaning or even feeling towards you as a person. You know nothing about them, so you wouldn't maybe even know if you were betraying them, because you wouldn't be able to betray them since you have no bonds together, no relationship no nothing. They would not feel any emotion whether you betrayed them or not because they are a complete stranger to you. This is why it would not be as bad to betray a stranger versus a family member or friend.

I agree with Chiristy and Emily that the reason the inappropriate desire is not as bad as anger, violence, and betrayal is because it doesn't harm others. Anger, violence, and betrayal can become less emotional but physical and harm others. However, inappropriate desire is a type of want, not a certain behavior. If the desire leads to anger, that becomes a problem and that also explains the reason why anger, violence, and betryal is more inappropriate.

I totaly agree with Sang Eun!
Think about it, if u kissed a guy that you knew had a girlfriend you'd be betraying that girl right? BUt since youu didn't know her she doesn't seem so real. On the other hand if you kissed your sisters or best friends boyfriend it would be all too close to home base, ruining your relationship with that person, your reputation with others and really changing your whole entire life.

find an example of imagery invoking the sense of smell, quote it, and write a sentence or two or three of "column two thinking" about it.

"Below them lies the seventh circle, and so fetid is the air that arises from it that the Poets cower for shelter behind a great tomb until their breaths can grow accustomed to the stench."

-I agree with what Kayeon wrote but I find another example. When the poets were on the seventh circle, unpleasant smell started to hit their nose. It smelt so badly that they had to hid behind a tomb and wait till they got used to the bad smell. We can imagine them smelling an unpleasant smell and hiding from it. Because of this, I think this is a example of imagery showing the sense of smell.

5. Sang Eun, Emily, and Savannah: why would betraying friends and family be worse than betraying strangers?

Betraying stranger is much different than betraying friends and family. Between friends and family, there this thing called faith. Friends and family are the one who we trust. All of us have that friendship we build through relationships, and if we betray it, then not only other person gets hurt, but person who betrays them will also get hurt later on. Betraying stranger sometimes would feel guilty but not as much as friends and family, because we do not know anyting about them the feelings we have towards friends and family are different than strangers.

The phrase 'ghastlier gangs refers to the other phrase from the Inferno:

'...And here the stink

thrown up by the abyss so overpowered us
that we drew back, cowering behind the wall
of one of the great tombs; and standing thus...'

The 'ghastlier gangs' are the Heretics. Clearly they must have really smelled from being inside those tombs for a long time. Or at least I think so.
