Answer to #2
"It was her duty to obey him without reservation or condition." and
"She yielded so wholeheartedly that she even disliked blaming him privately for his nights out."
The sentences above show that the woman believes that she must obey and listen to her husband even if he does something bad or immoral. This probably is because of her religion which is Muslim. On the other hand, I think the woman should have rights to speak out her thoughts against her husband's, because her husband can't be always right. I consider that men shouldn't rule over women but all of them should be equal. However the woman has different belief from mine that it's no problem for her to be ruled over by her husband.

Answer to #1 -1. Is there any way in which the mother pictured in the reading is a typical mom? Is there any way in which she is not a typical mom?
(I was confused about the 'mom' part bacause I was not sure if that was the mom of the woman, or the woman herself when she is a mother for her kids. I just made 2answers for this question)
-Answer-
1.(when the woman is a mother) According to the book, the woman seems like a typical mother. She does her best to protect her children all the time. For example she uses amulets, charms, and incantations. She is very worried about her children getting harmed. Even when she is asleep or awake, she always think about her kids. Typical mothers are very careful about their children and they always do their best for them to make the kids to be safe. Thus, she is close to a typical mother.
2.(The mother of the woman)
The woman was poisoned by jealously and she was concern about her husband when she thinked about her absent husband. She didn't asked anything to her husband but she had someone who can listen to her all the time. It was her mother. Her mother made the woman to rely on her and helped her to be confident by giving her some word of comfort. Typical mothers helps her children to rely on them when the children have a concern. They also give some advices to them to make them feel better. Thus, the mother seems like she is close to a typical mother. However, the mother just bear and ask her daughter to bear like her when she realized her daugther is having a hard time because of her daughters husband. Maybe she could had helped her daughter more or be angry about her son-in-law because usually mothers gets really mad when they see someone giving a hard time to their children.
question #1,
Savannah Rounds,
"her fears multiplied by her troubled soul's concern for them and her anxiety that they might be harmed."
In some ways the mother pictured in this reading is very much like a typical mom. For example she worries about her childrens safety and well being. Most every mother cherishes her children and worries about there safety. In other ways the mother pictured in this reading is far from what is nowadays in our culture considered a typical mother, for example when she "clasps him to her breast suddenly. she would listen intently with dread and alarm and then call out in a loud voice, as though adressing someone in the room, "leave us alone. this isn't where you belong!"" most typical oms nowadays are not really afraid of evil spirits or jinn.
1. Is there any way in which the mother pictured in the reading is a typical mom? Is there any way in which she is not a typical mom?
I believe that the woman in the reading is in fact a typical mother. "She would hold them tight, lavish affection on them, and surround them, whether awake or asleep, with a protective shield of Qur'an suras, amulets, charms, and incantations."(pg. 3) This quote shows that this mother has a strong affection towards her children and a care for their sanctuary. These are the views and characteristics any typical mom would have over their children. Although, a typical mother may not be so protective as she feels the need to shout out at surrounding demons, she still would do whatever it takes to keep her children from harms way. The mother also loses most fear of the demons for both her an her children. This also might happen to a typical mother; becoming less frightened for her children and herself as she learns ways to ward harmful things.

answer to question #1
1. Is there any way in which the mother pictured in the reading is typical mom? Is there any way in which she is not a typical mom?
I think the mother in the reading is a typical mom because in the book it says that when she's with an infant, she would rock him to sleep and that she cuddles with him. Which means that she cares about them. Also in page four, it says that she was rewareded by childern who were the apples of her eye. This sentence can mean that her childern are beautiful and sweet as an apple. Reading this sentence also lets me to conclude that the mother in the reading is a typical mother and that like all the other typical mother, she cares about them, she thinks of them more than anything else.

"I'm a man. I'm the one who commands and forbids. I will not accept any criticism of my behavior. All I ask of you is to obey me. Don't force me to discipline you."
"It was her duty to obey him without reservation or condition." (Agreeing with Sang Eun)
These sentences show that the woman sees the world through fear. She is feared into obeying her husband or he will discipline her. But she has learned to overcome these fears and look at her husband's behavior in astonishment. Most wives would be concerned with their husband's abusive conduct but she chooses to see the world in shallow terms. She chooses to see that her husband is only seeing her and is not cheating on her and that he loves her. Agreeing with Sang Eun I think this might be due to their religion which is Muslim. She only lives to please her husband.
1. Is there any way in which the mother pictured in the reading is a typical mom? Is there any way in which she is not a typical mom?
She is a typical mother in some form.
The book tells her characteristic by showing how she cares about her children and her husband by waiting until he comes and wherever he goes she lights and look out for him.
But on the other side, she could also be a nontypical mom. Although its good to care and look out for her family, but she lowers herself way too much that she does not even act like what normal mom should act like. She tries to suppress her feelings. She is so used to telling herself she is so content with everything even though its not okay.
On page 6, it talks about her husband coming back to the house with bunch of friends afterwards and the owner of the carriage says its a pity to bring a man like him to home and all he deserves is an ass.
Even though she heard him saying and people laughing, she suppressed her feelings by telling her that it is not a big deal even though it would be for typical women.
#1
She is a typical mom in some of the ways that she cares for her children and worries for them, however she is not a typical mom in the weight of her worries.
#2(partially agreeing with christy and sang eun)
The phrase spoken by the mother that shows me a portion of the way she looks at the world which contradicts my outlook on things is ”She learned from this, and from the other lessons that followed, to adapt to everything, even living with the jinn, in order to escape the glare of his wrathful eye. It was her duty to obey him without reservation or condition.” This is contradictory to my belief’s because I don’t believe that you need to do things in order to been on someone’s “good side” or avoid a prominent issue.

I think that in the type of relationship she has with her husband it is understandable to fear and respect him at the same time, although I do not understand why she feels so comforted knowing he is in the house (asleep or awake) when with him it seems she has to tip-toe around her own emotions.

Question #2
".. Even if the rumor was accurate, perhaps that was another characteristic of manliness, like late nights and tyranny."
The sentence above shows that the woman tries and learns to see the world in a very shallow way (agreeing with Christy). She deals with every fear and worry in a way that makes everything that happens right. However, by doing so, she will not have a voice herself. I believe that what her husband think is not always right and by only listening to her husband and hiding her thoughts, she is hiding herself. However, In her world and her perspective, it helps her to understand and get away from fear.

2. Can you find a phrase or sentence that points to a way the mom has of looking at the world that is different from the way you look at the world?
“At any rate, a single evil was better than many. It would be a mistake to allow suspicion to wreck her good life filled with happiness and comfort. ”
“With the passage of time she grew proud of whatever meted out, whether it pleased or saddened her.”
“She had no regrets at all about reconciling herself to a type of security based on surrender.”
The woman that is mentioned in the book is different from the way I look at the world. Even when her husband would force her to obey him, she wouldn’t say a word and would just change her perspective of the world so she wouldn’t be between the fights of human emotions. If I were her, I would fight for my own perspectives of the world than for the peace of my mind. Unlike me, when there were obstacles related to human’s emotions, she would ignore them and protect her from her peacefulness. Also, she would make excuses for them so she wouldn’t have to accept the problems surrounding her to protect herself.
Question 1 Sung Kun Kim
The mother here is a typical mom, because of her behavior during the night. She doesn't get to sleep well worried if the evil spirits would affect her child, since she is a muslim. She keeps memorizing the front page of their own bible and repeat incantations to protect her child. Typical moms would care about their child more than anything else just like the mother in this story which could be in a different way. And also, she worries about her husband about coming back to home late. She wanders through the balcony and her room anxiously waiting. These behaviors show that this woman is a typical mom who cares about her children and her husband.
Answer to #2
"Perhaps boredom was an irrelevant concept for a life as monotonous as hers"
"She became convinced that true manliness, tyranny and staying out till after midnight were common characteristics of a single entity"
Amina, the mother, appears almost to be in depression. She has doubts that she hides in the routines of her somewhat average life. However, it is clear that to some degree, she wants excitement in her life, some freedom. Who wouldn't?
I don't really believe in the outlook that Amina seems to have of the world. Monotony is usually self-perpetuated, and in general, I believe that one should have a brighter take on the world
This is Laura Wanamaker, and this is an observation I made:
"She noted that her brown scarf was wrinkled and pushed back. Strands of chestnut hair had crept down over her forehead." Then, the woman fixes the scarf to cover her head.
Also: "She seemed in a hurry as she wrapped her veil about her and headed for the door to the balcony."
This woman is Muslim, as said in the reading, but I would have guessed so anyway. Muslim women cover their heads with scarves out of respect for the higher powers in their lives, and in this part of the world, it is usual for a woman to cover her face before going outside. She does this even if there's almost no chance a man will see her. After the woman is married, she is not supposed to be admired by any other man than her husband.
What surprised me, though, is that she wore the scarf to bed. I wonder if it is because she expected to get up and wait for her husband at midnight, or if Muslim women wear their scarves to bed with them. I was curious about this.
1. Is there any way in which the mother pictured in the reading is a typical mom? Is there any way in which she is not a typical mom?
She's a typical mom because she does things that a typical mom would do these days, cook, clean, take care of the kids, and her husband. But for a typical mom these days would not be her husband's servant as in, dressing him, undressing him, cooking for him, obeys his every command, etc.
