Topics like romance and marriage do seem like to be important for Khadija, Aisha, and their mother. They don't have any chance to talk about it when any of the men members in their family is present. It's especially for Khadija because she seems to be kind of late for marriage. Her mother has married before she turned fourteen, but Khadija, herself is now twenty, and plus she doesn't seem to be having either womanlike personality or appearance. Aisha is still young compared to Khadija, however both of them are at proper ages of worrying about marriage. For Aisha, she can get married after her sister, Khadija gets married, so she needs to wait. In their cultures, when women get married, they probably have to stay at home doing house chores while their husbands go out for work. Therefore, their lives will be depended on their husbands' abilities such as how wealthy they are or what social positions are they in. In addition, as a mother of the two girls, Amina is definetely concerned and curious about the topics. Therefore, I consider that's why romance and marriage seem to be important to them.

The most prominent features of Khadija's personality seem to all have two sides. There is the side that makes it a good trait and a side that makes it the opposite. For example, on page 27, this is stated, "Although her sarcasm was humorous when aimed at a member of her family, she was a scold of the first degree with regard to their neighbors and aquaintances."
Another example of Khadija's two-sided points is displayed throughout the chapter and mentioned on page 28. Khadija is a very outspoken woman, and she doesn't seem to care who she hurts as long as they hear her and as long as she thinks she's told them right. This is sxplained as: "Her outspokenness was not merely satirical. There was truly no limit to her harshness if someone got in her family's way. Then her criticism of people was violent and devoid of tolerance and forgiveness." Even this has one MORE side! She is only very cruel when she feels that she is protecting her family.
It would originally be thought that Khadija having facial features "lacking in harmony or charm," would be a bad thing about her. True, it will make her feel like a monster sometimes most likely, and it will be harder for her to find a husband, but perhaps her lack of outer beauty will make it easier for everyone to see the strong woman inside of her. She has a powerful personality that does not lack true worthiness of admiration, as I've said before. If attention is brought off her face, perhaps the man who does marry her will love her even more than he would a beautiful woman. Her wit will not wither and sag like her skin will in old age. For this reason, she could be loved her entire life for more than simple, youthful beauty.

I think they all think that both marriage and romance is important that they secretly talk about marriage and romance when the father and the men are not in the house. However, I think there is some difference with how they think what is more important, marriage or romance.
I think marriage is more crucial than romance to Khadija. Khadija dreams of a loving man but she notices her appearance and now that she is a bit late for getting married( in the book, it explains that people got married at an early age like Amina who got married at 14), she is urgent about getting married. So she thinks marriage is more important and she should get married as soon as possible. However Aisha is different. She dreams about romance which she actually is in love, a very difficult love. The love that consists loving the policeman by herself that gives her fear. Since she is 16, she doesn’t worry about marrying someone because she already have gotten proposed by a stranger but refused, for the rules of Egypt did not allow younger daughters to marry someone earlier than the older one. Amina, just like Sang Eun said, marriage and romance would concern her very much because it is her daughters getting married.

Unlike her sister Aisha, Khadija doesn't have a charming looking face. She is plumpy and her face looks like a comdination of all the bad looking parts from her parents. Thus, she is always jealous towards her sister. Outspeaking is a bad habit of her. It seems like Khadija is a girl who has both a bad personaility and a ugly face at the same time which will be a prerequisite things in order to be a bad wife.
However, she is energetic all the time and she loves her family. She is just acting in a rude way to disguise her feelings. Khadija is also a girl who thinks a lot about marriage. According to the book, marriage is the only thing which she is apprehensive about.
"You're an extraorginary girl. Who can match your skill or energy? Or your quick wit and pretty face? What more can you ask for?"

I think Khadija can be a great wife for her future husband. Khadija is descrided as a ugly lady in the book. Nevertheless, the book also says that Khadija is putting herself down too much and she is just fine. Thus, I think she has a normal face. Maybe I'm wrong and she might have a ugly face but it will cause nothing to ruin her life as a wife. She has great skills and energy so it will let her to manage her house in a organzied way. Also, she is interested about marriage and I believe that Khadija will have so much fun by herself afer she became a wife and it will change her bad habits due to her happiness.

Khadija would be a good wife. We all know that she has a bad personality and very UGLY face:) but even though she has that bad side of her, she still cares alot about her family and that really shows how she will perform with her own marriage.

In my opinion i think Khadija would make a very good wife in some cases and a horrible one in others. Khadija seems to care about her family very much and it seems like she would be a faithfull wife and a loving mother.-"Khadija did not behave like this with members of her family. If one of them was indisposed, she was filled with tenderness and knew no rest.
In those times though I don't think her sharp tongue would be appreciated. It seems she dosen't have a huge control over her sharp tongue ether so she might snap at her husband which would not be apropriate or accepted in those times.-Ther was truly no limit to her harshness if someone got in her family's way'-

Khadija has good and bad points. Obviously one of her bad points is her sharp tongue. She speaks what is on her mind, even if it is extremely rude, which most of the time it is. Khadija thinks it is humerous. She is insecure with herself and how she looks. She is always jealous of her sister's beauty and figure. She is always putting her sister down about it. Always making remarks how she's too skinny and about her hair color, when really she is trying to hide her insecurities about herself.
Some of her bad points turn into good points. Khadija also uses her sharp tongue to protect her family and to defend them. When a neighbor or acquaintance says a rude comment about their family, Khadija was convinced to find their flaws and rip them to shreds with her remarks. She cared a lot about her family and didn't want them to to be made fun of, because she knew how it felt.

I agree with Savannah for the most part, however, I don't believe Khadija would make a very good wife. She appears at some points in the text to be very condescending and sarcastic. Within a family, this is accepted: However, it would be very difficult to maintatain a relationship with this attitude.

I agree with Laura that Khadija does in fact contain two sides of her personality. A side that contains good points and a side that contains bad points. On page 27, "Fortunately, this natural jealousy did not leave any negative residue deep in her soul. She was content to vent it through the sarcasm sauciness of her tongue." This quote shows that she can seem to come off as a rude girl towards her sister although she only means it as fun and games.
She does have a very opinionated choice of speech.
Khadija was not the most pleasant looking girl, compared to her sister which gives her a somewhat rude personality towards her jealousy of others as well. For example on page 27, "She called the widow of the late Mr. Shawkat, the oldest friend of her parents, "the machine gun," because of the way her spittle flew when she talked. Umm Maryam, their next-door neighbor, she named "could you spare?" because she borrowed household utensils from them now and then."
She also has a considerate side towards her family. "Khadija did not bahave like this with member of her family.............She could not stand for even Aisha to be afflicted by the slightest misfortune. Her heart had no equal both in coldness and in compassion." This quote shows she had equal feelings for her family with her love and her jealousy.

The main reason why I think this is true is because she clearly puts anyone before herself no matter how she feels toward him or her. Like when she insists on sharing a bed with Kamal when he had measles so Aisha has no chance of getting sick.

- Khadija is the oldest daughter in this family. But her younger sister is the one who has all the charm, including a beautiful voice and a pretty looking face. But I think this disadvantage that the nature has given doesn't affect her being a good wife to someone. As described in the book, "Moreover, she was a girl who, despite the handicaps nature had given her, had a heart full of affection for her family, even though she did not spare them her bitter mockery." she is a girl who loves her family and she would also be like that after she marrys.

Yes, I do think that romance and marriage seem like important topics for Khadija, Aisha, and their mother Amina. Khadija is concerned that she will become old and marry late, as where Aisha will most likely marry young, and has marriage has already been proposed once. Amina seems confident that Khadija will marry soon, however.
It is also important to note that the women only talked about romance/marriage when the men were out. Although it is presumably a taboo subject, they probably feel more comfortable talking within their own group.

It seems like marriage is impartant to Amina, Aisha and Khadija. Topics such as marriage can only dicscussed during when they have breakfast by them selves. During the times when their fahter is not present, it is then when they are allowed to discause about marriage. Although Khadija was little bit too old to get married, but she still needed to get married because in order her lottle sister Aisha to get married, her older sister Khadija had to get married before here little sister does. It was their duty to get married and do the chores of the household.

I think that's because where they are and what time period they're in, marriage is very important especially if the daughters are married off to a wealthy family.
